When is the right time for braces in children?

The right time for braces in children depends on the extent and type of malocclusion. It must therefore be determined individually. For example, a crossbite that results in crooked facial growth should be corrected as early as possible (from around the age of 6). Starting treatment later in these cases is associated with more difficult treatment and a possibly compromised result. Most findings, such as a moderately enlarged overbite, can be treated better at a later stage and by taking advantage of prepubertal growth. In order not to miss the individually ideal time, we recommend an initial examination at our orthodontic practice in Munich-Unterföhring from the age of around 6 years.

When does statutory health insurance cover the cost of braces for children?

The so-called KIG classification regulates which orthodontic treatments are covered by statutory health insurance. The possible deviations, such as overbite, lack of space, etc., are categorized according to degrees of severity from 1 to 5. For costs to be covered by statutory health insurance, there must be at least one deviation of severity level 3 or higher. Using the example of an enlarged overbite, this means that there must be a step of more than 6 mm between the upper and lower incisors for the statutory insurance company to contribute to the costs of orthodontic treatment.

How high is my co-payment for orthodontic treatment with statutory health insurance?

If a treatment plan has been approved by the insurance company, 100% of the treatment costs are covered by the health insurance company if the treatment is successful. The orthodontist settles at least 80% of the treatment costs directly with the health insurance company during the ongoing treatment. As a rule, the patient's parents have to pay 20% of the insurance benefit themselves for the time being during treatment. If several siblings are undergoing orthodontic treatment at the same time, the percentage co-payment is reduced from the second child onwards. Once treatment has been successfully completed, the parents will be reimbursed by the health insurance company for their own contribution.

What are additional benefits to orthodontics covered by health insurance?

The guidelines of the statutory health insurance companies stipulate exactly which treatment methods and remedies are covered by health insurance. In addition, there are measures that can be useful. Some examples of additional services are TMJ diagnostics, teeth cleaning, bracket surround sealing or smaller, more aesthetic brackets. The task of the orthodontist is to inform the patient about all available options, including non-contractual services. Ultimately, the patient decides to what extent additional services are desired.
Private supplementary dental insurance often reimburses the costs of additional orthodontic services for children and adolescents.

What does private health insurance pay for orthodontic treatment for children?

Orthodontics is included in most private health insurance plans for children and adolescents. Nevertheless, there are differences in the contractual conditions of the individual insurers. After individual planning, the orthodontist will always draw up a treatment and cost plan. It is advisable to submit this to the private health insurance company before the start of treatment in order to obtain certainty regarding the expected reimbursement of benefits.

Does my child still have to go to the normal dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Definitely YES! The check-up appointments with the general dentist should also be kept at the usual intervals during orthodontic treatment. An orthodontist is also a dentist. However, the focus of their work is different due to their orthodontic specialization. Important developmental measures such as prophylaxis, monitoring caries activity or sealing newly erupted teeth are part of general dental care. This should be carried out by the family dentist on an ongoing basis, independently of orthodontics
