What are the advantages of orthodontic treatment in adulthood?

Straight and esthetic teeth are good for your own self-confidence. However, they also have a positive effect on the perception of others. A study at the renowned Kings College London came to the conclusion that people with bright, straight teeth are rated as more attractive and intelligent by those around them than those with discolored, crooked teeth.

Are there invisible braces for adults?

Many adults who want straight teeth are put off by the thought of visible braces. Fortunately, there are very discreet and even invisible methods. The most inconspicuous way to move teeth is the so-called lingual technique. This involves fixed braces on the inside of the teeth. An appropriately specialized orthodontist is able to use the lingual technique to treat even highly complex malocclusions without compromise and completely invisibly.

Treatment with aligners (e.g. Invisalign) is also very inconspicuous. Aligners are thin, transparent and removable plastic aligners.

Is there a maximum age?

There is no maximum age for orthodontic treatment. In principle, tooth movement is possible into old age. Whether it is possible to correct the position of teeth and jaws in an adult patient depends less on the patient’s age than on the condition of their periodontium. The risk of periodontal disease increases with age. However, a completely inflammation-free periodontium is an absolute prerequisite for the safe movement of teeth. If there is inflammation of the periodontium (periodontitis), this must first be treated by a dentist.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

Regardless of the type of braces and the patient’s age, the teeth become somewhat sensitive after activation. Eating hard foods can be a little uncomfortable for a few days after the braces have been adjusted. However, the restrictions caused by braces are no greater in adults than in adolescents.

What is the difference between treatment for adults and adolescents?

In orthodontics, there is the tooth level and the jaw level. Deviations can occur at both levels. While tooth misalignments can be corrected by moving the teeth relatively independently of age, the possibilities at jaw level are somewhat more limited in adulthood. Useful growth for correcting jaw misalignments is lacking in adults. However, by choosing the right and individualized treatment concept, even pronounced malocclusions in adult patients can be treated.
