Minipin

Setzen von Minipin in kieferorthopädischer in München-Unterföhring

A minipin, also known as a mini implant or TAD (Temporary Anchorage Device), is a small screw that is used as part of orthodontic treatment. With the help of mini-pins, otherwise impossible tooth movements become possible. The principle behind this is called “skeletal anchorage”.

Setting and removing mini-pins

The minipin is inserted into the jaw through the mucous membrane after local anesthesia. The procedure usually only takes a few minutes. Unlike permanent dental implants, mini-pins are temporary anchoring implants. When they are no longer needed for orthodontic tooth movement, they are removed again. No anesthesia is usually required for painless minipin removal.

Functionality of minipins as skeletal anchorage

The purpose of a minipin is the so-called “skeletal anchorage”. If a tooth is to be moved orthodontically, this always requires a force and a counter-support. The force is traditionally provided by the braces. Without minipins, the adjacent teeth act as counter bearings for the desired tooth movement. This is referred to as dental anchorage.

According to the principle of actio = reactio, there is always a side effect on the anchoring teeth in addition to the desired tooth movement. If this side effect is undesirable, the use of a minipin can be helpful. The minipin anchored in the jawbone then serves as a counter-support for the desired tooth movement. As a result, the undesirable side effect on the other teeth does not occur.

Application area of minipins in orthodontics

Typical areas of application for mini-pins or mini-implants and the principle of skeletal anchorage are:

  • Gummysmile treatment (gum smile)
  • Asymmetrical tooth movements
  • Orthodontic gap closure as an alternative to dental implants.
  • Movement of all teeth within a jaw in the same direction, e.g. using a Benes slider or mesial slider
