Completely invisible – lingual braces

In our specialist practice, we treat a large proportion of our patients with lingual braces. The brackets are attached to the inside of the teeth. Braces are the most inconspicuous way of correcting crooked teeth. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, this treatment method offers many other advantages. Find out more about lingual tooth correction in this article.

Are there any other advantages compared to conventional braces besides the esthetic benefit?
Precision and individuality
A major advantage is that both each bracket and each archwire are made individually. Taking into account anatomical features such as the individual tooth and jaw shape, this results in a precision fit that cannot be achieved with prefabricated braces. The target position of each individual tooth is precisely defined before treatment begins. Due to the high precision of the individual brackets and arches, an orthodontist specializing in lingual braces is able to transfer the target position from the model 1 to 1 into the patient’s mouth.
Less caries and decalcification
Brushing your teeth is more difficult with fixed braces. If oral hygiene is poor, tooth decay and decalcification (white spots) can be an undesirable side effect of treatment. With lingual braces, white spots around the brackets are observed much less frequently. There are several reasons for this. The large salivary glands have their excretory ducts on the inside, which leads to good irrigation of the brackets. The tongue also performs a certain self-cleaning function.
Are there any problems with the tongue with braces on the inside?
Whether on the inside or outside, you first have to get used to new braces. While classic braces can initially cause irritation of the cheek mucosa, the tongue is more affected by internal braces. The flat design of the individualized appliances (WIN, Incognito) ensures that the discomfort is kept to a minimum. After a short familiarization phase, the tongue has become accustomed to the braces.
Is pronunciation impaired?
In some patients, a certain change in pronunciation is observed in the initial phase. However, good adaptation usually takes place within a very short time. In our practice for lingual braces in Munich-Unterföhring, we treat many working adult patients as well as adolescents. The fact that they include television commentators, for example, proves that excellent pronunciation is also possible with internal braces.
What should you look out for if you are interested in treatment in Munich and the surrounding area?
The right equipment
When working with braces on the inside, there are major differences in the appliances. Fully customized appliances are contrasted with prefabricated brackets and archwires. The prefabricated alternative is usually much more bulky and restricts the tongue space accordingly.
A high level of comfort thanks to the flat bracket design combined with maximum precision can only be achieved with fully individualized lingual appliances (VILA). The two systems developed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Dirk Wiechmann, WIN (DW Lingual Systems) and Incognito (3M Espe), are the best established. While the Incognito braces are cast from a gold-containing alloy, the brackets of the WIN appliance are made from non-precious metals. They are therefore somewhat cheaper to manufacture.
The right orthodontist – a specialist in lingual technology
Treatment with internal braces works slightly differently in some areas than treatment with traditional fixed braces on the outside. To achieve the desired result quickly and safely, it is therefore advisable to find an orthodontist who specializes in the lingual technique.
